Australian Gin Awards Results 2022
Notes from the Chairman
Congratulations to the five trophy winners and to all distillers who were successful in winning a medal or two. Thank you to the judges, the stewards and to the admin team.
You will notice that categories 6 (Traditional Gin Liqueurs) and 7 (Flavoured Gin) were combined in this year’s judging, with only one trophy being awarded in this amalgamated class. This was a unanimous decision from the judging panels due to ambiguity in the definitions for each class and consequent confusion evident among entrants. A low number of entries were received in “Class 6” as a result and a fair and clear winner could not be confidently awarded without bringing the classes together. There were several high scoring gins in contention for the trophy in the new “Class 6”. The judging panel deliberated on the merits of each gin for quite some time before the overall winner was agreed upon.
It is clear that the Flavoured/Gin Liqueur category is evolving in the Australian market, with the rise of wine-based gins, sloe alternatives, and more contemporary flavour choices becoming available. Our team is working to define this category more appropriately in the Australian context to ensure that each entry can be judged against the most suitable criteria. The AGDA will announce these changes early next year.

Comment from the CEO
Congratulations to those receiving trophies and certificates. This emerging industry is doing it with gusto. There were 475 entries into the Australian Gin Awards this year and 86 entries into the CCL Packaging Awards.
Gin Awards Chairman Mikey Enright and his teams awarded five trophies, 51 Gold, 123 Silver and 163 Bronze medals. There were 337 medals in total being 73% of the entries. The judges commented that the standard of gin production this year was noticeably higher than 2021. Well done all.
The CCL Packaging Competition is announcing four winners including certificates for Top Bottle, Second place and two Highly Commended.
Special thanks and congratulations go to our Head Steward Christopher Rose and to Project Manager Phoebe Scutts for their excellent contributions to the operations and administration of the Awards.
