Chairman’s Report
It was a great pleasure to Chair another Australian Gin Awards season.
We had a team of ten judges including me as Chair this year. We introduced three new judges from diverse backgrounds to add more depth and knowledge into the competition. It’s important to keep evolving and to introduce fresh minds and palates.
The new judges are Caoimhe Hanrahan-Lawrence from Intermedia, Ally Ayres Head Distiller with Karu Distillery and Journalist/Cocktail book author Alana House. We also welcomed back our international judge George Grbich author of “Guide to New Zealand Gin” from Auckland.
Many thanks to our core team Charles Casben, Lindsay Silcox, Scott Fitzsimons, Andrew Howell and chief steward Chris Rose. We nosed, blind tasted, deliberated and commented on every entry into the competition during the judging week.
Year after year, the quality and complexity of gins submitted to our competition have soared. This year’s entries were no exception, showcasing the incredible talent and innovation of our distillers. The entries were of a consistent standard across all classes from Classic, Contemporary, Old Tom, Matured, Over Proof, Flavoured and Liqueurs with a gin base.
All entries were assessed and scored then the best in class was chosen. Once this process is completed, we have a round table discussion with all judges and a tasting of the seven best in class to determine the ‘Best in Show’. This is tough decision time because the gins are such high quality at this stage of elimination. There can only be one ‘Best in Show’ and it was so close this year between the final two contenders. A Classic Dry Gin was voted the winner by a majority after several tastings. We also introduced an additional 47 medals this year for ‘Best in State’ per class to recognise a wide range of quality gins.
Thank you to all who entered this year, and I hope you find the comments valuable to the point where you will enter again in 2025 with added enthusiasm.
Let’s stay true to our Juniper beliefs and keep it flowing!

AGA PACKAGING AWARDS
BEST BOTTLE
Harriington Bjugard Distilling
Dry Gin
THE JUDGES WROTE:
The judging panel immediately took to the quality and design of the Harrington Bjugard Dry Gin bottle.
The decanter style closure gave a premium feel to the bottle. The simple, clean aesthetic was reminiscent of its Scandinavian roots.
The colour of the bottle matches the expected flavour profile, based on the simple, but informative communication of key botanicals.
The bottle communicates key legal information in a clear way, tied into the overall design.
Lastly the bottle feels pleasant in the hand, easy to pick up and pour from. A worthy winner of the 2024 Best Packaging Award.
